I was asked to come up with three donut stories.

I was expected to pre produce, plan, shop, style, prop, and have something to contribute at a pre pro meeting about the donut story shoot, only the night before our multiple set shoot.

We had long pre production meeting about existing "donut stories". We talked the direction we'd like to go as collaborative group.

Our goal is to produce a finished body of work we could string together that has cohesion.

Initially, the whole thing seemed easy enough. My first shoot went..well..I guess I could say it went by too fast.

Some setbacks were learning how to use a few new pieces of equipment; styling the food itself; which is a pain, and getting my set together all for my first time.

I've done it before.. at school and independent projects. But this is a commercial studio; during my internship. This was a bit much to manage, juggle, toggle, organize, prioritize, and think about thoroughly. This was an equation with lots of variables that ran overtime.

In conclusion, I loved the idea of Bacon donuts! My star for this shoot and shot #1 out of the starting gate. Piece of CAKE,.. well donut. Wayyy ... way more difficult than it sounded. WHY?? I did not anticipate some details. For example, the bacon is dark and much darker than a powder white donut. Hmm... it becomes a technical lighting riddle to solve...being that that bacon is so dark in contrast to a white sugar donuts. It can be done.. just a bit more work. ahhh! Not so convenient or time saving:(

At the end of the day as well as the conclusion of my 2nd month here, it's been an amazing experience of learning, growing and expanding in the areas of anticipating, planning, projecting a vision of how I want to see the finished project, shot, and realizing a very satisfying result. It's a distant stretch being at Brookes Institute in Santa Barbara.

Let me tell you more on the topic of Photo Interning.

My four week trial period of being a photo 'INTERN' was completed by Aug 19th.

I had been providing general support throughout studio, and specifically the Broadcast Department.

My Lens shifted on September 14th as it did for the studio. The last two week period changed focus on tasks, and responsibilities.

Here's just a sample of TASKS that have been expected of me in the last 2 weeks....

Time management, prioritization, project management, research and development, shooting, pre-production, writing blogs on my experience as an intern, emails, end of day summaries loaded with details about stuff I wasn't dealing with only weeks earlier, bringing in fresh cupcakes in exchange tardines, creative round-table meetings, and staying as late as it takes to get a job done, oh, and being selected as crew member to interview new interns.

NOT, exactly, a walk in the park, while juggling pre-production on upcoming art show of my personal photo work!

Blue Diamond Smoothies

16 smoothies and days of prop production.. oh I meant pre-production from... well the Blue Diamond Almond growers. We love almonds and Huerta Quorum. HQ is the agency that does marketing for Blue Diamond. They sell it at Trader Joes if you haven't tried it. Really quite yummy. We collaborated with Barbara and Suzanne to finalize the plan before 2 days of shooting. Our beloved prop stylist Kira Wohlman came to the rescue and managed to sniff out every potential smoothie glass and matching theme available on the open/closed market. We published some of our favorites on our website FPLA or foodphotographylosangeles.com-- our new favorite place to share off new shots.

Uncle Eddies Cookies: live action.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 255px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0seg9uCFmrw/TJEQWt9f_dI/AAAAAAAAAz4/7z6SrrB_50Q/s400/4_screenshot_09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5517209000986279378" />
After spending a good amount of time shooting high-speed short commercial clips of assorted chocolate chip cookie scenes, we just couldn't help but turn into true cookie monsters. All in good, messy fun though... Imstepf sought out a couple of models who didn't mind getting down and dirty for the day. The concept involved having the basic ingredients of chocolate chip cookies literally being chucked at a girl's face from all directions. Of coarse, this all just looks so sweet utilizing a super duper high speed camera that could capture every grain of flour rebounding off our model in mid-air. Other ingredients that were thrown at the models included chocolate chips, oats, and..yes..even a generous bowl of syrup. What can we say, food.. and everything that goes into it..is our forte.

Fish and Fruit a Dole Party

Who could think fish and fruit fit together?

Well the diet dictocrats have alot to say about fruit and mixing it with anything other than itself.

A whole lot of segregation issues. Hats off to Miss Cristen!

Syrup: Blue Syrup is cool, but is it edible

Blue syrup seduces the creative eye. Well actually its blue soap. This steely blue magic acts like syrup, plays like syrup.. in fact its a good cousin to syrup in texture and viscosity. It gets a bit more bubbly.. as in bath bubbles. It looks so freaking cool-- Technical for cool blue tones/hues; and blown out highlights. This way of shooting does not adhere to conventional definitions of commercial advertising. OOps.. hey let's invent our own rules... let those corporate square pants envy creative ones like us. They can drool over the freedoms of the artist struggle: like the unknown;an inconsistent existence of a working artist -whatever that means-- the endless late nights obsessing over ways of seeing something, or interpreting it, telling a story in your own voice.. not keeping all your ducks in a row! .... ya.. those square pants corporate yahoos,,, can chew on that one, while they enjoy keeping to their calendars!

Syrup: The Journey Continues

The sticky stuff: syrup continues to amaze the eye. It's never the same. Never still, with every movement you see the unlimited possibility of showing such a simple subject in so many ways. Then there is the idea that if you want put it on the reel, it has to be practical. As in how does this apply to the market,, the commercial world. How does an art director see the potential in an abstract shot of syrup. Well maybe an AD can see it but clients, can be very block headed and not see the forest beyond the trees. "They" say .... bla bla.. this is what works.. that is what works.. works for what!?..the reel, the client, the buying audience,, the who? Do we shoot to catch fish, or express ourselves? What about just shooting what you love.. and not worrying about marketing... How about the idea of " build it and they will come?" WE could get lost for weeks generating the coolest shots of high speed... syrup pours over pancakes,,, waffles,,, suspended fantasies of endless worlds withing worlds... Shoot it, and they will come.

Syrup: A Visual Journey through the Sticky Stuff

Syrup is a beautiful viscous substance up close and personal. Drippy drop shots are dutched, and scooped down low, on the high.. macro up close wett gooey oohhhweeey. Point is.. this stuff in the RED camera is an obsession that could last a while. Hours, days, weeks,,, months?… Well, we don’t really want to go that far. Practical is important.. like how about something for the reel, the website,,, the client to drool over. That is another spot. We spent the month counting the virtues of oil, how to light the stuff, on black, white, low light, back light.. under light.. perspective a-z , and surfaces unlimited. Very moody, subtle and requires the patience of a saint. Don’t get that stuff on the camera!!!

10 Days Looking

10 days is a personal project seeking, looking, and lingering in places, and spaces.

Shooting for clients and “working for clients”all the time has a way of getting in the way of SEEing

Feeling makes the way to see again. We workshop by ruminating every week on imagery that we collect. Together we discuss images that inspire, titillate, and move us to act, think and feel. We lay out images across the floor and notice what works, and what doesn't. Our favorites of the very best go up on display for all to see. We continue the discussions until the next meeting. Just recently we made live contact. It was the end of last season. We got a call from lead Creative Director Barbara Cocks to do some work for a fruit company doing consumer print advertising. What was more surprising is that HQ wanted a live meeting to discuss details of the shoot, so that we could create an estimate.

What a tickling feeling to realize that all the emails, and phone calls and postcards might have finally reached a live art director. Last week was Evan’s introduction to the studio.. and we are so pleased to have him on set. We love, like, appreciate, we are into his wholesome Pennsylvania vibe. Evan is a superb team player and a shining soul– as in sparkly, strong, sweet, super duper cool. What a treat to have him reorganize the prop shop, like having grandma bake brownies for the weekend. He’s a machine, a well maintained, in check up to date mechanism!! Excellent Attention to detail, he is focused, clear and efficient with time. This makes Evan an ideal match for the IMSTEPF crew. We think he will gel with the IMSTEPF standards of high quality in pursuit of maximum efficiency with minimum output. We WILL provide more updates on Evans progress as the events unfold. At times marketing is overwhelmingly void of validation, understanding, recognition, or reward. Tossing rocks into the abyss to test how close we are to gaining the affection of the next art director is at times the only way to know anything about the unknowns of marketing and assignment shooting.

Marketing food photography can feel imprecise. The unknown, the unpredictable, and the unseen can be agonizing. Great anticipation and expectation precipitate eager wanting for the results of the last e-mailer to return; or the last blitz of postcards to yield droves of phone calls from art directors, art buyers and creative directors. Our ears hunger for the expected... hey there, I got a job I need you to shoot; send me over an estimate.

Having a meeting with Ms. Angela Krass of FOTO & ART PROJX sobered us to a few basics. We were reminded that good things come with effort, consistency, hardwork, and discipline. It sounds so boring and square doesn't it? Most decisive in our time with the divine Angela Krass alerted us to the vital importance of reinforcing the internal reserve of inner validation. This inner validation is a sort of recognition that lives in the heart, mind, body and of course, the spirit. These areas of existence get easily shuffled aside when it comes to business.

But just a few weeks ago, we got a call from a new client we'd being pursuing via mail, email, and occasional phone calls… for 3 years. Instant gratification happens but it's not a permanent fixture in the world of assignment photography. The internal reserve of private validation is the one constant you can count on.

Angela spent a generous portion of time sharing her experience, insight, understanding of photography, the business of photography; the art of photography, and the significance of creating compelling imagery that speaks to its viewers with passion, emotion, and soulful connection.

As we brought our meeting to a close with Angela Krass we both felt such an elated and comforted state of mind that we didn't want to let Angela go. We wanted to keep her in our hands to nurture us, validate us.. Encourage us, pat us on the backs, and shout good job team!!

We were reminded to get out of the studio mentally and to solicit outside voices from professional peers, critics, consultants and others of the like to initiate dialogue about the work. We also realized how starved we were feeling for validation. Oops did I say the V word~~ ?

Community, connection, interdependence is the wave of now. It's also a tool which dilutes a desperado need to validate ones work. We often talk about forming a local group to rap about assignment photography share work, have portfolio dialogues and critiques.

Angela's presence reminded us of the significance of having our peers critique the work we produce.
Reflecting on our a-z list we concluded we are kicking some noble booty on all borders from intangible marketing, electronic mailers, Search Engine Optimizing, networking in person and on the phone, shooting for the book, stock, optimizing the roadmap, the mission statement, yadda yadaa.. the list continues.

In the presence of an angel like Angela Krass we remind ourselves to shoot the things we love, the way we like to see it, in the light that speaks life, love and truth. Because we are photographers we can do anything. We bow to Angela Krass of FOTO & ART PRJX for connecting with the IMSTEPF team.

connect with FOTO & ART PROJX ANGELA KRASS

Our Food Family

Our friends and family, like a spice cabinet, add eclectic depth and width to our visual palatte. The studio needed an economical way to replace the dinosaur copier machine that was going on the kaput really fast.. rapido fast… Parts are becoming obsolete for our current copy machine. When parts become obsolete then its inevitable IMSTEPF studios must move onward and upward for improved technoolgy. There comes a time when technology wins in the techno centered mindset. Production requires deadlines and pressurized pronto mentality I want it all.. I want it now.

So, here's the story: we called Peter Milczus at OCE business services. Peter is the man of the hour at world famous IMSTEPF studios. Peter Milczus was our hero and still is. He's a tall Nordic Viking Manly Man who likes coffee and good food. Peter Milczus won over the IMSTEPF heart and mind instantly. First because he responded immediately. Second, because he didn't waste any time. In a pinch Master Milczus's efficiently presented IMSTEPF studios 3 solutions. He came out and did the OCE song and dance in mini version in our production office. We signed up for a pretty black machine the following week.

Bottom-line — we needed a machine that could match our current output to do proofs in the high quality. WHAT We needed was practical price and no cash upfront. WE got everything we wanted. If the machine ever as so much as burps.. OCE sends out a tech to fix the mega mogul of an all in one machine of Copier, fax, printer, email functions and the kitchen sink. OCE fixes the machine at no cost for anything FREE, gratis.. no cost to US. We have a monthly lease. We pay a few cents for every color copy and less for black and white. It's like having the water and power folks out to read meter and invoice us later. We gave a canon 6016 away on craigslist. The old phaser 780 by Xerox is FOR SALE! The fax machine is on the way out too. Thanks to the OCE mammas, pappas and our MAN Peter Milczus.

Our spectrum of managed solutions spans the document lifecycle including print/copy, mail services, business performance management, records management and eDiscovery. Our Records, Compliance and Legal Solutions division is one of the most experienced providers of eDiscovery, paper discovery, forensics and web-based review services for complex litigation and regulatory compliance matters. © Business Services’ integrated capabilities serve enterprise-wide requirements with advanced technology, people and processes. We have been so lucky to be called on by the photo department of Buena High! The very first email came from Alice Sheley back in 2007 and we were blushing with pleasure at the opportunity to serve the photo department in any way we could. We felt perplexed initially because it wasn't a local LA school contacting us but felt the need to respond.

Right now the school needs photo equipment and lots of helpful input for the students to have the best opportunity to excel. We love every chance to pass on the love and reinforcement. Thanks to Alice Sheley of Buena High for reaching out to touch us. We feel like heck why don't we do that ourselves more often??

Alice has inspired us to continue push the envelope of mental limits. Right now we are working methodically on passing on some useful resources to Buena High. The Prop room and workshop is getting a thorough detailing right now to explore what we can pass on to the students in the photo department of Buena High.

We laugh at ourselves because, the exchange with Buena High prompted the studio to examine ways to serve Los Angeles photo departments and high schools. Serving the community is one way we'd love to expand our circle of friends. Thanks to Buena High Arizona /Alice Sheley we feel the inspiration to follow through on the abstract discussions and concepts into making them real.

Buena High School
5225 E Buena School Blvd
Sierra Vista, AZ 85635
(520) 515-2800

www.salpointe.org

A Little About Us

We provide creative photography for advertising.
